Biography

Vera Ronnen (1930-2015) was born in Hungary. She studied at the Ecole des Arts et Métier, and at the Beaux Arts in Geneva, Switzerland. From 1950 to 1977 and 1984 to 1993 she was a professor at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem. She lived and worked in Israel and London.

Ronnen's work combines medieval and modern industrial enameling techniques to create unique large-scale and site specific architectural works. The preparatory work for these pieces was done in her studio, before their final realisation was executed in factory settings with sufficiently large furnaces to accomodate their large scale. At the factory all work was done by Ronnen with the help of her assistants. Enamel colours were applied by sieve in several layers to a pre-enameled steel surface, which then underwent multiple firings. In the kiln the powerful opaques and gentle transparent powder colours fuse, bringing out the particularly subtle beauty of the superimposed colours, resulting in a depth that is unique to this process.
